Our work

The work of Wolverine Wellness is guided by health promotion principles to support the health and wellness of our campus community through education, collaboration, and advocacy. We believe that centering social change, social justice, and health equity will help us dismantle oppression that occurs on our predominantly white campus. As health promotion leaders, we work with U-M students, faculty, staff, and campus stakeholders to co-create and enable conditions where well-being and belonging are prioritized so everyone can thrive.

Wolverine Wellness utilizes the 5 core actions of health promotion — including the intersection of well-being and identity — as our guidepost and to foster innovative strategies that support our mission.

Prevention/Re-orient Services

We work with people at all levels of the social ecological model, from the whole community to the individual level, to re-orient the campus culture and reduce harm. We believe in evolving to do better and changing our approach based on the latest data and research.

We do this by:

  • Working proactively to reduce predictable harm
  • Striving to understand and respect different needs, cultures, experiences, and everything else that makes each person unique
  • Supporting students in exploring all 8 dimensions of well-being and connecting them with relevant resources
Personal Skill Development

We provide students with personalized and equitable access to resources to help them build their skills. We also work with loved ones, staff, and faculty who support students on their unique path to well-being.

We do this by:

  • Utilizing evidence-based behavior change and skill-building strategies that focus on the values and strengths of each individual
  • Facilitating skill workshops and trainings
  • Creating population-level skill-building campaigns
Creating Supportive Environments

We create supportive environments that allow individuals to be seen, valued, and heard. We aim to provide a sense of comfort by centering belonging and amplifying well-being.  Additionally, we advocate for supportive and inclusive environments where we live, work, and play.

We do this by:

  • Offering unique contributions to the campus community, including our therapy dog program, wellness course, and recovery support
  • Amplifying the efforts of campus partners who prioritize the non-dominant student experience
Strengthen Community Action

We equip campus partners with knowledge and skills that support collective well-being goals as leaders and/or allies. In doing so, we value the wisdom, lived experiences, and personal agency of our campus community members.

We do this by:

  • Intentionally involving the people impacted by the work and building relationships with them to set priorities, make decisions, and take action
  • Sharing technical skills and resources with the campus community as they explore and embed well-being into their practices
Policy & System Level Change

Sustainable transformation within our campus community can only be achieved through policy and systems-level changes. Through coordinated efforts, we identify obstacles to achieving health equity and work to ensure well-being is embedded in the campus community experience.

We do this by:

  • Serving as the backbone structure of the Well-being Collective
  • Gathering input from the campus and community stakeholders to inform recommendations on policies
